Description
[Illustrated] Dounce, Francis. The Dance of Death from the original designs of Hans Holbein.London: Printed for J. Coxhead, Holywell-Street, Strand, 1816. 8vo, (4) 70 pp., contemporary brown cloth, bookplate of John Whitehead Walter (in color) an English painter (1815-1895) on upper pastedown, embossed library stamp at bottom of title of a private collector or bibliophile with his note on the rear flyleaf. 'The portrait of Hollar was done by Francis Barlow (1626-1702). He was said to have been greatly influenced by Holler, who was his senior, incidentally by about 20 years' (initials), A pencil note 'Lowndes 1084, hand colored frontis, illustrated by 33 plates by Hans Holbein all beautifully hand colored, very good copy. A very scarce, color illustrated edition of Hans Holbein's 'Dance of Death'. With thirty-three plates total, comprising thirty one hand coloured engraved plates after W Hollar and two engraved portraits. Holbein's emblem book was first published in 1538 and was regarded as a triumph of Renaissance woodblock printing. It demonstrates Death's intrusion on the lives of thirty-four people who are at different levels of society. Wenceslaus Hollar first published his 30 copperplate adaptations of Hans Holbein's dark allegory of Dance of Death in 1651. The 1816 edition incorporates the 30 plates, plus engravings of Holbein and Hollar and, published at the waning of the gothic moment, is most notable for its bold illustrated plates the most famous of which is Hollar s The Dance of Death Procession," originally engraved for a 1658 history of St. Paul's Cathedral. This printing is the first that includes an essay by Francis Douce on the history of the dances of death.J.E. Edwards, Bookseller, obtained the original Hollar engraved plates and then issued a London 1794 Edition, the 1816 edition was the same as the 1794 edition; Very nice edition of The Dance of Death with the Hans Holbein illustrations (29 plates) plus two portraits and engraved frontis; all plates hand colored; All in a folding cloth over board cover, inside a slip case with a leather spine label.Lacking most of leather spine label otherwise good, inside recent brown cloth slip case with red leather spine label, in brown cloth protective folder.
