[Classics] Holyday, Barten [translator]. Decimus Junius Juvenalis, and Aulus Persius Flaccus Translate and Illustrated as well with Sculpture and Notes. Printed by W. Downing fir F. Oxlad Senior, J. Adants and F. Oxford Jr. Oxford. 1673. Small folio, (12) 341 (1) pp., Original old paneled calf binding later rebacked, raised bands, gilt spine lettering, end leaves detached, early bookplates, one Jacobean (Joseph Whatley - faint) and second Kirby Flower Smith with design, first title printed in red/black, with two title page vignettes, illustrated with 36 copper engravings, includes one folding engraved plate (at page 72), three full-page engraved plates (pp. 47, 127, 210), 17 woodcut figures and decorative initials throughout, initial capital letters and some head pieces, text tight, moderate browning, one page (p. 45/46) with lengthy tear and marginal paper repair (text complete), text printed in single & double column, laid paper, with the uncommon final leaf [Xx4] with the vertical half-title reading "Dr Holyday on Iuvenal." Barten Holyday D.D. (& Late Arch-Deacon of Oxon (Oxford)) (1593-1661) was a theologian, dramatist, & translator his translation of Persius's Satires first appeared in 1616 (& was republished in 1617 & 1635), but this 1673 edition was the first appearance in English of his version of Juvenal (a posthumous edition), translated "line for line & contains voluminous notes'', Persius (or Aulus Persius Flaccus, AD 34-62) was a Roman satirical poet as was Junius, good copy of this 1st edition. Wing J1276; Madan 2927. Wear and scuffing at edges. Slight chipping throughout the text block.
