(1) 485, (1) 487-939 pp., (mixed set, Volume I 1847 and Volume II 1846 -both title pages with New York -Wiley and Putnam and both bound from 19 original parts) Black morocco with marbled boards, raised bands with gilt lettering, brown end papers with old pencil names. Illustrated by J. W. Orr, Gimbel A104; Edgar & Vail, p. 24; Smith AMERICAN, 7; VanderPoel B197(1); Wilkins, p. 25).(Note: As usual the final plates for chapter LIX were not included and the single dark plate is located at page 823 in Volume II)Wiley & Putnam were the first of the US houses to hit the streets with Dickens' new novel, beginning with Part I issued October 1846.though in the rush to press, the part was issued without the 2 plates found in the Bradbury & Evans production. A quite scarce edition, especially in comparison to the UK parts issue, which shows up with some regularity. Boards rubbed, wear at top of spine and joints, contents clean with a small outside corner stain at top for a number of pages, scattered foxing.
