Description
French, circa 1890, titled "Halte Flamande" (Flemish Halt), the rotating vasi-form cobalt body richly decorated with hand-painted rustic vignettes within gilt traced cartouche shaped panels, signed in the scene 'G. Poitevin'. Fitted with gilt bronze handles and a detachable cover, raised overall upon a porcelain socle atop a gilt bronze bracket base. The underside of the lid and base with spurious interlaced gilt Sèvres marks and letter E. Measuring, 42.5" high. Provenance: 12th Quebec Premier, Simon-Napoléon Parent, KC (King's Counsel) to his descendants. Note: Simon-Napoléon Parent often attended auctions with Sir Wilfrid Laurier; it is said that they purchased a similar vase at the same sale, which is on display at the Wilfrid Laurier House, We can find a proof of their friendship in this quote taken from Laurier's biography (intervention in provincial affairs): “Marchand’s death on 25 Sept. 1900 created a difficult problem of succession (in Quebec). There were many aspirants to the premiership. Called on to decide, Laurier … chose Parent, who had given him his undying loyalty and admiration.”
