French, circa 1890, the finely sculpted and gilt patinated figure of a young woman known as 'Danseuse au Cothurne', showing her hair in a diadem and wearing a long gown, demonstrating fine movement and poise while adjusting her sandal. Signed verso A. Léonard Sclp., for highly regarded French sculptor Agathon Léonard (1841-1923), also stamped with impressed Paris foundry mark for Susse Frères, together with the letter M for chaser Magenot, measuring 21" high, weight 23.6 lbs. Note: Léonard moved to Paris when he was quite young, and studied sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He became a member of the Société des Artistes Français in 1887, and a member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1897. He regularly exhibited across France, and was made a chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in 1900. Bronze casting of Léonard's work was carried out by the Susse Frères Éditeurs foundry (Source: Wiki).
