Sperm whale folk art sculpture. American School. Early to mid 19th century. Carved wood, bone and sperm whale teeth. With inlaid bone plaque incised "L. Failing. Overall approx. ## x ## in.
A fascinating wood sculpture a carved wood sperm whale mounted with the preserved rostrum of a sawfish. The rostrum is 10.5 inches and bears 50 teeth. Embellished with bone inlay.
“L. Failing” has not yet been identified, but they may have been a sailor or whaler.
