Manner of Limner School Portrait Of A Gentleman. Circa 18th century. Folk art portrait of gentleman wearing stock and vest. An oil painting on canvas support. A three quarter portrait of a young handsome gentleman with dark hair and eyes, who appears facing slightly turned to his left, holding a page of script in his lap. He is elegantly attired in a black coat with shawl collar over a black stock and white waistcoat. The right side of the composition depicts a vermilion drapery gathered and tied back with an ornament with a view of a landscape. Pigmentation is applied opaquely in hues of charcoal, black, ivory, white, vermilion, umber. The painting exhibits the Folk Art characteristics of the Limner School of Colonial to 18th Century America which exudes charming but awkward perspective. flat linear quality and elegant clothing and demeanor of the sitters. The painting has similar naive folk art characteristic of other artists of the school including Sherman, Beardsley, Schuyler Limners and Sheldon Peck. As Is: Losses.
