Item Details

Description

First Nations / Canada, Northwest Coast, British Columbia, Haida Gwaii archipelago, Haida people, ca. 20th century CE. A finely carved argillite pipe in the form of an anthropomorphic head whose hat serves as a pipe bowl with a raven perched behind and a tubular stem that tapers to the mouthpiece. Sculpted in detail with delineated plumage, the bird holds both wings to his sides as his elongated beak stretches out to rest on a vertical reed on the head of the other figure, forming a handle for easy grip. In Haida stories Raven brought light to the world, and freed the first humans and provided food for them. The act of the bird touching the head of the anthropomorphic figure with his beak may symbolize a transference of spiritual knowledge. Size: 7.4" L x 1.3" W x 2.6" H (18.8 cm x 3.3 cm x 6.6 cm)
