First state, one of the "Jesuit Maps".

A finely engraved map of North America illustrated with ships and sea monsters. An attractive vignette portrays European colonists among native warriors, perusing maps showing the spheres of influence of the English, French and Spanish in America. Scherer’s Atlas Novus consisted of eight volumes and 187 plates and was innovative in its combination of highly decorative Catholic iconography and (for the most part) accurate cartography. Scherer, a Jesuit, attempted to chart the revival and spread of the Catholic faith in the late 16th and 17th century.
