Description
ANONYMOUS (INEN SEAL)
Chrysanthemum Blossoms
Edo period (1615-1868), late 18th/early 19th century
A two-panel folding screen; ink, colors, gofun (calcified crushed oystershell gesso), gold and silver flecks on paper within a silk brocade border, mounted on a wood lattice within a lacquered wood frame, depicting two large and two smaller stands of flowering chrysanthemum, all white except for one of the smaller stands, with seal Inen at lower left
60 3/4 × 61 73/4in (154.3 × 156.8cm)
Footnotes:
This is an attractive reworking of the theme of white chrysanthemums applied in impasto of gofun, a favorite of several artists working within the tradition known today as Rinpa, including Tawaraya Sōtatsu (1570-c.1640), the 'Master of the Inen Seal' (17th century), Ogata Kōrin (1658-1716), and Sakai Hōitsu (1761-1829). The seal differs from that seen on authentic 17th-century versions and it is likely that this screen is one of many of this subject painted in the latter part of the Edo period.
