(Harry S. Truman) The Famous "Dewey Defeats Truman" Mistaken Newspaper Headline by "The Chicago Tribune"
Wednesday November 3rd 1948-Dated, (Harry S Truman): "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN" Famous "Error Banner Headline", First Edition Front Page of "The Chicago Tribune" Newspaper, Framed, Choice Near Mint.
A superb quality virtually Crisp Mint, beautifully presentation framed, historic and famous "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN" Front Page Newspaper Banner Headline by The Chicago Tribune. The Newspaper measuring 16.25" wide x 11.5" tall (by sight), professional archivally framed to fully 22" x 16.75" overall (not examined out of the frame). The Front Page as shown through special UV Plexiglas is matted within a lovely black wood frame and is ready to display. This historic world famous newspaper is one of the most avidly displayed and collected American Political Newspapers due to its spectacular headline considered one of the greatest Presidential Election "Errors" of the of the 20th century. Here, the Pro-Republican newspaper, The Chicago Tribune, combining excessive optimism with the desire to get a jump on the competition, rushed into print their November 3rd 1948 Edition, proclaiming Thomas Dewey to be the victor. However, late voter returns from California tipped the balance to Harry Truman, and the rest is history.
Truman was also photographed beaming while holding up a copy of the Tribune, probably the most iconic political photograph of the 20th century. Early American History Auctions previously sold a "Harry Truman" Signed copy of that rare photograph many years ago, and have not had another to offer since. Interestingly, the same phenomenon occurred in 1916, as several different newspapers proclaimed Republican "Charles Evan Hughes" to be the victor; however once again late results from California gave the presidential election to Woodrow Wilson. This newspaper Headline is absolutely excellent as made in its overall condition, with trivial light even tone, else exceptionally very clean, boldly printed as made, defect free, and appears excellent. Virtually unimprovable, beautifully displayed within a handsome professional frame viewed under special UV Plexiglas, and is ready to hang on display.
