1916-Dated, Partially-Printed Document fully Signed, "Franklin D. Roosevelt" in violet ink, as Acting Secretary for the Navy Department, on an testimonial certificate, Choice Very Fine. This Document measures 9" x 12.75", has a vignette of a Navy warship, and certifies that, "W.A. Smith has, on board the U.S.S. Louisiana, attended and successfully completed the prescribed course of instruction for the Naval Training Cruise for Civilians for the year 1916, and this official "Certificate of Service" is issued to him as a "Testimonial of Fidelity and Patriotism." This rare printed form has light even tone to the fully margined well printed certificate. It has some minor margin creases, a 2" long clear tape repair on the blank reverse that nicely seals a near invisible split at top center edge. FDR's bold 4" long deep violet ink signature is strong and legible. A great document with a large central WW1 vintage U.S. Navy Battleship vignette. A scarce, WW1 fully Signed, "Franklin D. Roosevelt" Navy Certificate that is ready to frame and display.
The USS Louisiana (BB-19) was a battleship, launched in 1904 and commissioned in 1906. Between 1913 and 1915 the Louisiana operated off the eastern coast of Mexico, protecting American interests during the Mexican civil war. During 1915-1917 she served as a naval training ship at Norfolk, VA, and later saw service in the Atlantic during World War I.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882"1945) was the 32nd President of the United States, serving an unprecedented four terms from 1933 until his death in 1945.
