Other Notes: The photographer, Jeff DeBevec (American b. 1947) writes about the present aerial photo taken from a helicopter ride in 1989. The event was a National Football League matchup between the Houston Oilers and Pitsburg Steelers. The Houston Oilers defeated the Pitsburg Steelers 27-0. Despite DeBevec's initial curiosity regarding the famous Houston architecture, the photographer captured more than the pleasing geometric physical form of the building and grounds but also the, "...main event: a celebration in a city built for the automobile." The image was originally snapped as a color photograph but presented here in monochromatic black and white. Houston is world-renowned for its industry, boots-on-the-ground commerce, and as a city built for revenue. Rows of vehicles are neatly parked in concentric rows, no doubt paying for each space. The familiar Astroworld grounds entrance is visible south of the 610 loop, which is located at the top of the image, with cars whizzing by. The iconic image of vintage Houston culture captures the radiating growth of Houston, at one glance, rekindling any Houstonian's fond memories of visiting the once-unmatched and beloved Astrodome.
