A LOUIS XVI STYLE GILTWOOD CANAPE À LA TURQUE, FRENCH, 18TH/19TH CENTURY, after designs by ébéniste Georges Jacob and in a slightly transitional style popular in the 1780s, the crest rail has an "à la turque" style of relief carved, dense acanthus leaf garland entwined with a wilting flower bud crawling vine with a slight curve joined by two straight arms over an enclosed upholstered back, with acanthus leaf encrusted scrolled hand terminals, raised on severe, neoclassical style supports with carved flower chain and acanthus leaves to a block and rosette joint issuing legs with carved feather arrow end quiver legs with ring turned and fluted details, raised on French toes. Later added upholstery, chips, losses, rubbed areas of gilt, gesso, and rouge primer exposed, loss of finials, later gilt likely added, repairs and restorations to legs, damages are apparent and expected for age, use, and materials.
