Description
AN AFRICAN WOOD SCULPTURE OF A STANDING MAN, DENGESE FIGURE, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO, MID 20TH CENTURY, carved wood, cowrie shells, raffia cloth, glass beads, metals, and twine. Height: 20" Width: 5" Depth: 5 1/2" Provenance: Estate of Robert William Guynn; Elliot Howard Collection, collection number EXH1009.
Other Notes: The present figure represents a king or a social elite of the Dengese People. The Dengese people are a subtribe within the Kuba complex of tribes from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The stylized figure has geometric designs incorporated. It is adorned with both antique bead and metal necklaces. The figure wears a skirt woven of natural raffia fiber with cowry shells attached.
