Huntington (~1820-1824). Engraved broadside, printed area 21.5 x 16.5 inches on a sheet of wove paper trimmed to 22.5 x (shy of) 17.75 inches. Lacking three mostly marginal pieces as follows: (a) approximately 2.5 x 2.75 inches of top left corner, with loss of the first two letters, and part of the third letter, in “Unanimous”; (b) approximately 2.25 x 4.25 inches of top right corner, with loss to flourishes and the tops of the final letter in “United” and to the tops of all letters except the penultimate in “States of”; and (c) approximately 1 x 3/4 inches along the bottom edge toward left corner, with loss to only the final flourish to Geo. Read’s printed autograph signature. CONDITION & PROVENANCE: Formerly folded up into a long octavo packet (as usual with legal documents of the Colonial and Early Federal periods), with wear along most folds and fold intersections. Chipping and ruffling along sections of (mostly) left edge, a few spots of brown staining. The whole mounted long since---after an unknown number of years of folding and unfolding and fond patriotic display (perhaps occasioning the loss of both top outer corners, by which the broadside was probably held up, or tacked up, for display)---to brown paper and thereby better preserved over the long haul. The long-time owner reports they acquired the broadside in OSWEGO COUNTY, New York. Withal a rare, important, and highly desirable survivor, the damage to which tells a story wholly lacking from the only really clean copy we have seen.
