URGENT SUPPLIES REQUESTED FOR WOUNDED FRENCH TROOPS AFTER THE BATTLE OF CASTIGLIONE.

It was the Italian campaign of 1796-1797 during the French Revolutionary Wars that brought the young and ambitious Napoleon Bonaparte to prominence. He was appointed commander-in-chief of the army in Italy in March 1796 and went on to huge success, particularly at the Battle of Lodi in May 1796. During an interval in fighting after the Battle of Castiglione on 5 August, our document requests hospital supplies from the Congrés d'Etat de Milan.

Provenance: Private European collection formed by the owner's father some 50 years ago.
