Item Details
Description
Oil on canvas in the manner/style of Granville Redmond. Our definition of “In the manner/style of”: The auction house believes that the work is done in the manner or style of the named artist and possibly after their lifetime, but the actual authorship is unknown. Dimensions: 76 x 76 cm. Artist information: Edgar Alwin Payne, American, 1883-1947. Edgar Alwin Payne was born in the heart of the Ozark Mountains in southwest Missouri in 1883. Payne worked as a traveling carpenter and commercial painter eventually making his way to Chicago where he very briefly attended the Art Institute of Chicago. Preferring to develop his talent through experience rather than structured curriculum, Payne began traveling around the country in search of new subject matter. In 1909 Payne found himself in Laguna Beach and was struck with renewed inspiration before the coastal landscape. Over the next thirteen years, he spent his time between Chicago and the California coast and in 1918 established a studio in Laguna Beach where he founded the Laguna Beach Art Association and served as its first president. During his time in California, he developed friendships and working relationships with artists including Jack Wilkinson Smith, F. Grayson Sayre and Conrad Buff. In 1922 Payne set off for a two year painting tour of Europe working in Brittany, Paris, Provence, Switzerland, and Venice. Captivated by the sea, he painted scenes of ships on the open water, ocean coasts and boat-filled harbors in an Impressionist style. His most significant European works were executed in France and were met with immediate artistic and financial success. Payne’s rendering of sailboats employs a geometric composition of solid colors with an interplay of tones evoking the nuances of sunlight. In 1941 Payne wrote Composition of Outdoor Painting, a comprehensive book on composition and composition forms. The book also explains landscape painting techniques, color, repetition, rhythm, and value. This book is still considered by many artists to be foremost manual on landscape composition. After a 14-year separation, Elsie returned to help Edgar in 1946, upon learning that he had cancer. She stayed with him until he died, 8 April 1947. There is a bronze relief sculpture of Edgar at the Laguna Beach Art Museum, done by Elsie in 1952. She championed his work until her own health, and degradation of eyesight, caused her to stop in 1959. She moved in with Evelyn and her husband, in 1969, in Minneapolis. Elsie died peacefully 17 June 1971. You can find works of Payne's that are of Italian harbors, the Alps, landscapes of Laguna, but Edgar Alwin Payne is most remembered for his work of American Indians of the Four Corners area, and, of course, the paintings of his beloved Sierras. In the Sierras, high up in Humphrey's Basin, you will find the lake named for him, Payne Lake. His work was an influence on Bill Wray, John Deckert and other painters.
