Item Details
Description
Oil on Masonite in the manner/style of Gertrude Abercrombie. A Blue Ribbon Horse - Untitled - (Stallion and Shed) is a replacement image of a shed with a window through which we see a female figure, representative of Abercrombie. A horse's head emerges from the right side of the building, while the horse's tail is seen on the left. This minimal scene partakes of the surreal and humorous qualities often found in many of Abercrombie's works. Our definition of “In the manner/style of”: The auction house believes that the work is done in the manner or style of the named artist and possibly after their lifetime, but the actual authorship is unknown. Dimensions: 20.5 x 25.5 cm. The painting is framed in a beautiful black and old gold frame, it may be the same shown or similar. Artist information: Gertrude Abercrombie, from 1909 to 1977, was an American painter based in Chicago. Called the queen of the bohemian artists, Abercrombie was involved in the Chicago jazz scene and was friends with musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, and Sarah Vaughan, whose music inspired her own creative work. His parents were Tom and Lula Janes Abercrombie, both were opera singers who were in Austin on the day of Gertrude's birth. The family used in Berlin in 1913 to further her mother's career, but the start of World War caused the family to return to the United States. Upon their return, the family used in Aledo, Illinois, before settling in Hyde Park, Chicago, in 1916. She was raised at home in a strict Christian Scientist environment. He earned a BA in Romance languages from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign in 1929. After probably studying figure drawing at the Art Institute of Chicago, she took a year-long course in commercial art at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, which will improve her first job drawing gloves for advertisements for Mesirow's department store. She also probably worked as an artist for Sears. Provenance: Private Collection, New York.
