Cf. Bruno Walter was a German-born conductor, pianist, and composer. One of the great late 19th/20th century musicians.
He was born in Berlin in 1876. In 1933 he fled Nazi Germany to France and was naturalized as a French citizen in 1938, in 1939/1940 he moved to the United States where he lived until his death.
He began his career as a pianist but made his debut as a conductor in 1894 at the Cologne Opera. By 1900 he was at the State Opera in Berlin, and in the following year he became Gustav Mahler’s associate in Vienna; the beginning of what was to be a lifetime spent in the promotion of the master’s music.
