From The New York Times Archives December 15, 1976George Stroganoff Scherbatoff, a retired Navy commander, was killed Monday night when his car was in a collision with another on Route 22 near Brewster, NY He was 78 years old and lived in Sharon, Conn.He was born in Russia to a family of the nobility. He dropped his title of Prince when he became an American citizen in 1927.During World War II he was one of a group of naval officers who served as interpreters for President Franklin D. Roosevelt when he met with Stalin at Yalta in 1945.George Stroganoff Scherbatoff was friends with and became very close to our client’s family in Sharon, CT where they both lived. Our client who is now 86 years old believes that he was around 5 or 6 when they met. He said that George would often come over to their family’s house for dinner when he was not in Washington, D.C. and participated in other family activities. Our client indicated that he was a traveling companion to George and felt as if he was like a son to George as he never married or had children. Our client was gifted the two Russian icons and the wax seal that are presented in this auction and was also given George Stroganoff Scherbatoff’s family Bible. Upon George Sherbatoff’s death, the will instructed our client to return other family heirlooms to his only living relative, a sister residing in London, England. Our client indicated that George’s mother was a Stroganoff who married a Scherbatoff.
