Item Details
Description
Qing dynasty (1644-1911), depicting a pine with two cranes, one poised in flight, the other standing, in a springtime landscape, and an additional two cranes with pine in flight among clouds around the borders, with apocryphal Xuande reign mark within a double circle
h. 1-7/8
dia. 8-1/4 in.
Provenance:
Private collection, Greenwich, CT
The crane and pine subject matter, which usually yields a rebus meaning "live long as pine and crane", is further altered by the springtime setting seen on this dish, where it conveys a wish to newlyweds that they "grow old together remaining as young as spring." It can further be understood as "growing old in life together."
