Item Details
Description
With Ming reign marks and exterior with five circular vignettes interspersed with fretwork carving, mid-17th century, originally purchased from Christie's June 1984 Hatcher Collection sale, with sticker present

h. 2-1/8 w. 5-5/8 in.
dia. 2 in. (base)

Provenance:
Base with 'Hatcher Collection Christie's June '84' sticker, and interior with a Northeast Auctions label, Sale 8067, 16 Dec 1997; then by descent through the family of an important South Salem, NY collector

Note: The Hatcher Cargo was salvaged in 1983 from the wreck of a 17th century Chinese ship in the South China seas by Captain Michael Hatcher. It is one of the largest groups of Chinese porcelain ever recovered in good condition from the sea. Hatcher and his crew brought up about 25,000 pieces of unbroken porcelain and sold them at Christie's, Amsterdam, in a 1984 auction that made international headlines.
