Description
Follower of SIMON JOHANNES VAN DOUW (Dutch, circa 1630-1677) A Battle between Christians and Turks unsigned; attributed on an old fragmentary label (affixed to the reverse of the panel); also attributed on a newer, larger label (affixed to the reverse of the panel) oil on panel 58.75 x 83.75 cm (23 1/8 x 33 in). framed 79.5 x 109.0 x 7.0 cm (31 1/3 x 42 9/10 x 2 3/4 in). Footnotes: N.B. The larger label affixed to the reverse of the panel identifies the artist and reads: 'Flemish school pupil of Peetr Snayers, Court painter for Kind Louis the Fourteenth. Accompanied the king to various battle fields to paint battle scenes. / The battle scene pictured in this picture was from the battles in Flanders. / There are about 11 battle paintings in existence mostly in European museums.' This painting has been examined via digital images by the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD) and it is their opinion that it is most likely a copy after a now-lost painting by van Douw.
