Item Details
Description
Desideria Montoya Sanchez (San Ildefonso, 1889 to 1982). Blackware pottery jar, n.d. Signed "Desideria" on underside of base. A beautiful blackware jar made by San Ildefonso artist Desideria Montoya Sanchez and presenting a bulbous body, rounded shoulder, and inward-curving rim all sitting upon a narrow, planar base. Fired to a dark black hue, the exterior of the vessel exhibits an intense luster across the lower body as well as matte areas on the shoulder forming a fish scale-like pattern with an undulating lower border. Desideria Montoya Sanchez was the sister of Maria Martinez and daughter of Reyes Pena. In 1909, she demonstrated pottery making with Ramona Gonzales, Ana Montoya, and her sisters Maria and Tonita Roybal at the Museum of New Mexico in Santa Fe. They sold their finished pieces to the public. Size: 7" Diameter x 4.7" H (17.8 cm x 11.9 cm)

Provenance: private British Columbia, Canada collection, gifted from aunt in Tucson, Arizona, USA, acquired prior to 1994
