Heidi Melano (French, 1929–2014) after Kazimir Malevich, Suprematist Mosaic Panel, 1980. Glass tile and plaster mosaic panel after Suprematist artist Kazimir Malevich's 1927 painting "Mystic Suprematism (Black Cross on Red Oval)," with initials "K.M" in reference to Malevich.
Heidi Melano was a renowned mosaicist who studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Geneva. Melano's mosaic interpretations of works by Leger, Braque and others are highly sought after. In 1987, Melano was commissioned to create two monumental mosaics for the exterior of the Fernand Léger National Museum in Biot, France. Larger works by Melano have sold at Christie's at an excess of 300,000 USD.
