Description
Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. Finely painted in egg tempera on gesso-covered wood, a lovely double-sided icon featuring the image of Saint Thomas the Apostle on one side and the Raising of Lazarus on the other. Surrounded by a green velvet border, Saint Thomas is shown draped in robes and facing right as he holds a scroll in one hand and raising the other. Alternatively, on the verso in the subject of one of Christ's miracles: the raising of Lazarus from the dead. His two sisters kneel at Christ’s feet, while the apostles Andrew and Peter witness the resurrection. Lazarus stands at the entrance to his tomb, still in his burial shroud, which a youth is beginning to unwind. Size of image (both the same): 3.6" W x 5.3" H (9.1 cm x 13.5 cm); of icon (both the same): 4.8" W x 6.7" H (12.2 cm x 17 cm); of frame: 7.75" W x 9.75" H (19.7 cm x 24.8 cm)

Stable fissures to wood with chipping and minor losses to gesso and pigments. Small areas of old insect holes. Liberal remaining detail. Set in wooden frame with velvet on one side.
