French Oil on Canvas, Ca. Later 19th C., "Vercingetorix And the Gauls", H 29" W 41" | Unsigned. Depicting king Vercingetorix on horseback with two riders and his united Gallic tribes in the background. He would later meet his demise in conflict with Julius Caesar. Having a painted wood frame, H 36", W 48". High quality painting, finely detailed and executed. Provenance: Collection of James A. Brescoll, Bloomfield Hills, MI.
Condition
Original canvas. Restretched with a newer stretcher. Scattered small spots of overpainting in the background and at the figures. Band of overpainting in the clouds extending to the figure's right arm, on the left hand side. Small cluster with flakes of pigment loss in this area as well. 6" line of overpainting at the black horse's legs.
