Description

South America, Bolivia / Peru, Aymara or Quechua culture, ca. 20th century CE. A pair of 3 handwoven mantles that likely use a blend of synthetic and wool from sheep and possibly alpaca. Blanket mantles are usually worn by women and held in place by pins and /or belted at the waist. In the late 19th and throughout the 20th century, Andean weavers developed a strong preference for newly introduced chemical dyes and pre-spun synthetic fibers, associating their usage with wealth. Factory-produced yarn was much more costly than homespun wool, but the irresistible array of vibrant colors, unattainable with natural dyes, fueled a significant demand. Size: 43" L x 36" W (109.2 cm x 91.4 cm)
