Description
Classic early 19th century New Hampshire sampler featuring alphabets in varying stitches and a three-sided flowering vine border. Within a cartouche at the bottom, it is inscribed: (Betfey F Chafe/ Hopkinton. Wrought/ This Sampler in the / 11 year of her age/ 1822)
Betsey was born in Hopkinton, NH to Daniel Chase and Sarah Tucker Ferren. At age 18 she married William Restieaux and they had 5 children. She lived and was buried in Hopkinton, although she actually died in 1879, in Concord.
The sampler is in excellent condition no holes, stains, or thread loss, with some slight overall fading. It is sandwiched, not mounted, between the glass and backboard. Silk on linen; 18 x 17.25 inches sampler size.
