Dexter Arnold Hawkins (1825-1886) was an American educator and lawyer. He was particularly remembered as an active advocate for public education, with his proposed “Act to Secure to Children the Benefits of Elementary Education” being passed into New York state law in 1874. This work also provided provisions for accountability in state spending, and his research and data were instrumental in bringing down the corrupt Tammany Hall political organization in New York. He was also known to be an abolitionist in direct contradiction to his ancestor, Sir John Hawkins (1532–1595), the English naval commander, privateer, and slave trader, considered to be the first English merchant to profit from the Triangle Trade.
