Description
Early 20th Century Schuetzen with a 32" octagon barrel that measures 1" in width at the receiver and tapers to 13/16" at the end of the barrel. Ramp protected front sight, missing center bead. Top flat of the barrel is knurled from the action to the front sight. Engraving on the barrel extends from the receiver 1.25". Sling swivel installed on the barrel 7" from the forend. Action is a Schuetzen falling block. Engraving covers 90% of the action. Right side features a German hunter elaborately dressed holding a rifle over his left shoulder, muzzle pointing down. This panel is surrounded by floral scroll engraving with a deep punch dot background. German proof marks in the upper right corner are visible. Left side features an equally elaborate German hunter showing a powder keg across his chest while twisting his handlebar mustache. This panel is also surrounded by floral and scroll engraving and deep punch dot. Top of the receiver is engraved with an hourglass design in deep relief, featuring deep floral and punch dot engraving on each side of the top. Bottom features the same hourglass floral design. Looped trigger guard. Upper and lower tang also exhibit similar engraving design. The top of the falling block is heavily engraved with punch dot and bars. Rear of the top tang has an area to insert Schuetzen adjustable sight. The sight is engraved with deep relief to match the receiver. The stocks are two piece walnut with a smooth forend with hand checkering on the bottom. The buttstock is ornately carved with a thumb rest on the right side and a large cheekpiece on the left. The thumb rest has a 1/2" sliver chipped off. Buttstock features hand checkering in fleur-de-lis pattern at 22 LPI. Metal Schuetzen buttplate has the same style deep relief engraving and features a smooth knob at the top and a single hook at the toe. Sling swivel mounted in the toe. The forend is held with a barrel wedge and has a Schnabel tip. CALIBER: 8.15 & 46. S/N: 38179. FFL STATUS: Curio & Relic.
Condition
Barrel finish is a brown patina with various dings and scratches at the edges of the octagon. Action retains 40% original case hardening that has turned to a dark coat of varnish. The falling block shows moderate slide wear on the sides. The upper tang and rear sight show the original varnish. Forend retains 90% original finish. Left side near top has a 1/2" long crack. Right side of the forend near the Schnabel tip has a heavy crack extending back 4.5" and ending at the crossbar. Buttstock has 60% original finish with moderate scratches mostly around the cheek piece and at the toe of the buttstock. Left side of the stock at the bottom of the action has a fine crack that extends 5/8" to the rear. Metal buttplate has turned a brown patina. Dark bore with visible rifling. Mechanics need some adjustment.
