Description
Received in warehouse on October 27, 1883. This factory nickel finish Model 1866 Winchester, Serial Number 164540, was shipped in Order #2603 on August 18, 1898 with its sister rifle, Serial Number 164514. Features a 20" round barrel with full length magazine tube, standard front blade sight and rear carbine sight. Barrel markings just behind the barrel band read "Winchester Repeating Arms, New Haven CT Kings-Improvement Patented March 29, 1866 Oct 1860." Barrel, magazine tube, barrel bands, and sights are all factory nickel finished. 1866 Fourth Model Saddle Ring action. Entire receiver, trigger, trigger guard, loading gate, saddle ring, bolt, hammer, lever and lever knob are all factory nickeled. Chambered in .44 Rimfire. Buttstock and forend are straight grain walnut with standard 1866 carbine dimensions. Forend extends 9" from the action. Buttstock is straight with a nickel buttplate and original factory cleaning rod housed in the buttstock. This condition and factory option are rarely available. Included letter from Cody Firearms Museum confirms all options and manufacture date. CALIBER: .44 RF. S/N: 164540. FFL STATUS: Antique.
Condition
Overall the barrel, magazine tube, barrel rings retain 70% of the original nickel finish. Most of the wear is showing on the end of the muzzle and 6" of the bottom of the magazine tube. End of the barrel shows some nickel flaking, approximately 1/8" up to 1/2" from the muzzle. Both right and left side of the receiver retains 93% of the factory nickel except for heightened edges. Wear on the bolt in a 1" x 3/4" area. Faint saddle ring marks on the nickel with two faint flakes. The top of the tang, lower tang, trigger, hammer and lever retain 90%. Some light freckling on the edges of the trigger guard. Moderate edge wear in the nickel around the carrier block. Very good bore with no evidence of pitting. Forend retains 60% original finish with a ding on the left side, 3" in front of the receiver, approxiately 1/2" x 1/8", with light to moderate handling marks. Buttstock retains 70% original finish with a medium 1/2" x 1/8" half moon indentation from the saddle ring on the left side. Remainder of the stock has light handling marks. Buttplate retains 80% original nickel. Strong mechanics.
