Dick and Fitzgerald published the first American edition of this book in 1861 or 1862, but this is likely a later printing.
While FDR was a student at Harvard, he joined a social and literary club--founded in 1836 and still operating today as the Fly Club. Roosevelt served as the organization's librarian for a time, exercising his literary interests by purchasing books for use by club members. This work developed into a lifelong passion for collecting books. FDR's book, manuscript, and print collection formed the basis of his Presidential Library at Hyde Park.
