Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Sican to Chimu culture, ca. 700 to 1400 CE. A double chambered bridge-spout vessel, the front chamber spout has a bird perched on top and a vent hole pierced into the bird's chest. When intact, this piece was probably a whistling vessel that produced music utilizing the principle that fluid would move from one chamber to another, thereby displacing the air in the second chamber that would vent through the small piercing on the bird- emitting sound. Size: 7" L x 3.5" W x 5.5" H (17.8 cm x 8.9 cm x 14 cm)

Condition
Loss to spout rim as shown, and neck is reattached to the body with break line around the base. Bird beak is repaired reattached and body reattached to the spout. Light mineral and earthen deposits.
