Central Asia, India, ca. 19th century CE. A cast bronze statue of Nandi, the vahana of the god Shiva. He is depicted here standing on a hollow pedestal, with a necklace bearing multiple lingams, phallic objects of divine power. The vahana, meaning in Sanskrit "that which carries/that which pulls," is an animal who a particular Hindu deity uses as a mount or vehicle. The relationship between the god and mount is a sacred one, celebrated in iconography and mythology. The worship of Nandi and Shiva is ancient, and can be traced as far back as the Indus Valley Civilization. Size: 2.9" L x 1.8" W x 4" H (7.4 cm x 4.6 cm x 10.2 cm)
