Item Details
Description
East Asia, China, late Qing period, ca. early 20th century CE. An evocative stoneware figure depicting a standing luohan or arhat - - one of the 18 original followers of Gautama Buddha who have followed the Noble Eightfold Path and attained the 4 stages of enlightenment - draped in a robe as he gazes intensely forward, his bulging eyes, raised brows, and gaping mouth conveying an air of extreme captivation and enthrallment. A lustrous glaze envelops his tall body with hues of sage, periwinkle, and navy splatter across his floor-length robe. He holds his hands together at his chest, just beneath his chinstrap beard and moustache, as elongated ears that symbolize his deep spirituality flank his tonsured head. Size: 4.3" L x 6.2" W x 20.7" H (10.9 cm x 15.7 cm x 52.6 cm)
Luohans were commanded by Buddha to await the coming of Maitreya, the Future Buddha. This promise of salvation held great appeal to Chinese Buddhists during this time, for they had just been through a period of great persecution, and a cult built around the Luohans as guardians was gaining momentum. Luohans had escaped the endless cycle of death and rebirth in Buddhist teachings. They chose to remain in this world to spread the Buddha's message. This sculpture and many like it would have adorned the great Buddhist cave temples, hewn from the mountains of Northern and Central China. These caves were vandalized at various periods so many sculptures only survive as fragments.
