Description
This is a very fine old wood and terracotta clay pipe from the Makonde peoples of Tanzania, Africa. Crafted into a anthropomorphic form and featuring a clay bowl and wooden body, with a water chamber and a bamboo reed stem. note the fine incised designs and strap handle. Among the Makonde people these ‘Nyangwa water pipes’ were not just meant for use but were rather objects of prestige. They were only owned by village chiefs or priests and are therefore rare. Museum style mount. The pipe itself measures 11 x 8.5 inches, 13 inches tall on museum style display stand.
