First Edition.The culmination of Hendrik Christian Andersen's (1872-1940) internationalist-utopian vision of a World City, centrally planned and built to foster universal human cooperation and the arts. The first section is a history of city planning, the second lays out his plans for the city itself. Both sections lavishly illustrated with architectural drawings, plans, and model sculptures, alongside detailed explanatory texts providing rationale and historical background. Each element of the city is accounted for, from an Olympic stadium and complex to government buildings. Andersen believed that the ideal physical environs of a city as well as a plethora of cultural offerings would stimulate mankind towards cooperation and self-improvement; his vision was shared by many artists, architects, and the international-minded in the halcyon days just preceding the first World War.
