Japanese Satsuma Vase with Figures and Dragon, probably late 19th century in date, represents the height of the decorative porcelain in Satsuma ware. The entire surface of the small vase is richly accented with a theatrical gathering of lohans meditating in the mountains. One appears to have conjured a dragon, a protector of the Buddhist faith. His spirituality and power is indicated with a halo-like aura that surrounds his head. The expressions of each lohan convey astonishment at the appearance of the dragon. Faces are finely delineated. The dragon form is further embellished with moriage techiique--white enamel beads in slight relief. The level of artistry of the vase suggests it was created by some of the finest potters working in the Satsuma tradition. The Shimazu family crest is prominently placed on the shoulders of the vase. The base also bears the mark of the Shimazu family crest and the phrase: Dai Nippon or "Great Nippon "
