Description
2 Japanese Nabeshima Porcelain Dishes are painted with popular motifs in underglaze cobalt blue. One of the dishes, probably 19th century in date, is decorated on the interior with a pair of swirling dragons. Molded motifs of waves radiate on the interior to the rim, scalloped to resemble a flower form. The exterior sides are decorated with good luck motifs. The tall foot rim with comb pattern is a distinctive feature of Nabeshima porcelains. The other dish is decorated with chrysanthemum (kiku) growing by a rustic bamboo fence. The fall motif is painted in soft tones of cobalt. Good luck symbols accent the exterior sides and the tall foot rim with comb pattern is a Nabeshima feature. This dish probably dates to the 18th-19th century. blue.
