Mary Mapes Dodge was the recognized leader in juvenile literature for almost a third of the nineteenth century. She was the editor of St. Nicholas Magazine for thirty years and is the reason Rudyard Kipling wrote The Jungle Book, his first children’s story. George Wharton Edwards was a popular American impressionist painter and illustrator. He was art director for Collier’s Magazine from 1896 to 1907 and he illustrated many children’s books. The story of Hans Brinker, or of any boy born and bred in Holland, cannot be fitly told without including something of the story of Holland itself—of its history, its oddities and the leading characteristics of its heroic and thrifty people. All of these must be borne in mind, for some of the traits peculiar to his race are ingrained in every Hollander, young or old, and Holland is as different from Elsewhere as can be imagined. Published 1933 by Charles Scribner’s Sons. Retains the complete front cover pastedown which is a bit tanned and lightly stained at bottom. One tip rubbed through. Minimal rubbing to extremities. Tiny hole at bottom front joint. Contains all eight full-color, full-page illustrations, as called for. Interior sound and complete. A nice book. 329 pp plus ad page.
