First World War, Egypt and Palestine.- Edwards (Walter, East Kent Regiment) Diary of service in Egypt and Palestine, manuscript, 84pp. excluding blanks, in pencil, original cloth, slightly rubbed, 120 x 75mm., [1917] – 18; and 5 other First World War items relating to another soldier, Victor Lack, serving in France, v.s., v.d. (6). *** “Nov 5 1918 … we came against a Turkish outpost. They proceeded to attack… Turkish fire seemed to increase but there was no returning without orders… two mounted officers came up… we think they were spies… . The situation was hopeless… the cavalry came up and supported us and drove the Turks back… the Turks are in full flight. Nov 17 We are salvaging the Turkish lines in Gaza… . Everything seems to have been blown sky high. Such a terrible mess I have never before seen, one could stand in the shell holes and be completely hidden.” – Edwards.
