Description
The Fang, who lived in a region stretching from Yaoundé in Cameroon to Ogooué in Gabon, were never politically united. Clan cohesion was maintained through religious and judicial associations such as the so and ngil. The appearance of masks, generally coated with kaolin (the white colour evokes the power of the ancestors), in the middle of the night, could cause fright. The male secret society ngil, which no longer exists today, was responsible for initiations and combating witchcraft. The ngil was a purifying fire ritual symbolised by the gorilla. A guarantor of peace, it also determined the seasons, the location of villages and the conditions under which agricultural land was to be used.
