Considered by many among the greatest Westerns of the classic Hollywood era, the film received six Academy Award® nominations, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Jack Palance. In 1993, it was entered into the Library of Congress' National Film Registry for its influence on American cultural history.

These original Paramount Pictures photo negatives features several key characters, including Shane (Alan Ladd), Marian Starrett (Jean Arthur), and Jack Wilson (Palance), in classic sequences throughout the film, such as Shane's defeat of Chris Calloway (Ben Johnson).
