Description
''Miner's' Cup (''Nussbächerpokal'') Transylvania, 1567 Silver, gilded, cast, embossed, chased, hallmarked, engraved. Inspired by the double goblets made in Nuremberg and Augsburg, the cup is decorated with Renaissance elements of great artistic value. On the basket of bowls are ribbon-shaped scrollwork cartouches with smooth medallions and medallions with plant arabesques; below the rim of the cup, a ribbon-shaped inscription in majuscules and the year of manufacture encompasses the bowl: ''FOM BERGVERK IN SIEBENBIRGEN IM BVRTZENLANT AM BVRZENHAUPT GENANT IST DAS SILBER KVMEN DURG GOTTES HANT IM IOR 1567 B K''. The bowl (cuppa) is depicted by two figures, representing miners - in their usual work clothes for that time ? , which are supported by the cylindrical shaft of the cup. The domed circular base, set off twice, is decorated with au repoussé driven and hallmarked floral and fruit motifs. The cup is given a historical-documentary significance by the place of silver mining indicated in the inscription, namely the mine at the Burzenhaupt in the Transylvanian Burzenland. H. 14,4 cm, 290 g. Lit.: Slotta-Wollmann-Dordea (1999), Kat.nr. 129. (In the Mining Museum in Bochum, Germany, there is a copy of the piece described above); Gyarfas Tihamer, Kronstadt, 1912, no. 29.
