Item Details
Description
East Asia, Japan, Edo to Meiji period, ca. 19th to mid-20th century CE. A fine gilt wood sculpture of Buddha standing barefoot on a double lotus pedestal as he displays the Vitarka mudra of teaching and discussion with his right hand and holds a circular container in the other. Draped in flowing robes that form a U-shape across his chest, the tranquil figure displays a calm visage of downcast eyes, a pointed nose, and petite, closed lips, all crowned by a spiraling coiffure. The Vitarka Mudra is the mudra of "discussion", indicating transmission of Buddhist teaching. The circle formed by the finger and thumb symbolizes the constant flow of information and energy. This is most commonly done with the right hand as seen here. Size: 5" W x 13.5" H (12.7 cm x 34.3 cm)

Provenance: private Rochester, Michigan, USA collection
