Description
Suzanne Pipkin (Kansas, Born 1938)
Lavender-Green
1981
This newly discovered work by the enigmatic colorist Suzanne Pipkin of Kansas City is sgraffito signed lower right front and again verso near the title. The style and technique are unlike previously found works and yet the effect lends itself to her description of her paintings as 'layered.' In this case it's as if there is a solid, static, constant layer behind trails of streaming color in motion.
In the late 1970s and early '80s, more than a decade before earning her bachelor's degree at the Kansas City Art Institute, Suzanne Pipkin applied to canvas the energy, color and motion she experienced in her mind's eye when viewing certain objects. Of translating these sensations to canvas she said, ''When I would start one of my layered acrylic paintings, I had no preconceived idea of the end result. I was in the process of experimentation from the very beginning. It began with a single color, which led me to another - and I was in the zone. As I worked, I was constantly looking to see that the colors were connecting and giving energy to each other, and the overall piece. It was so exciting to see it evolve.' This canvas seems to have a beginning and an end in much the way she described her visions back then.
Overall framed size measures 32.5 x 30.5 inches.
