Description
Pre-Columbian Olmec jade bench figure, Mexico, ca. 900-600 BC. This small-scale greenstone sculpture depicts a stylized figure sitting on a seat, staring forward. The pictured individual has exaggerated proportions and elongated features, but otherwise resembles a human. The sculptor carefully sculpted the individual's face with a stolid look, deeply piercing the eyes to accommodate potential inlays of other precious materials such as shell or obsidian. The squared ears also have little drill holes for attaching beads or other adornments. The arms, separated from the body by linear drill holes, have slight muscle and end in blocky hands resting on the bench to the side of either leg. Drilled holes through each shoulder may have previously utilized to attach other perishable pieces such as a cloak or other garment. 7" H
