A grouping of 40 letters addressed to William Patten (NY 1865-1936), by various persons, some famous, most hand written with pen and ink autographs and are in good condition. Patten was a famous illustrator, artist, art editor at Harper's Weekly, and had a long term association with Collier's Magazine. Writers include George E. Woodbury (American poet and literary critic - 1855-1930), Temple Scott (British born rare book expert and writer; William Allan Neison 1864-1946) - educator, writer, lexicographer); Nathan Haskell Dole (1852 – 1935) was an American editor, translator, and author; letter from the secretary of the Committee On Erection Of The Memorial Arch At Washington Square" - R.W. Gilder; William G. McAdoo, 1963-1841, US Secretary of Treasury - Director Genealogy Of US RR, and son-in-law of President Woodrow Wilson; Roswell Field (VT 1807-1869) one of the lawyers in the Dred Scott case arguing Missouri slave Dred Scott's case that African Americans have a right to US citizenship; etc. Provenance: From the Thomas & Gail Rockwell collection, LaGrangeville NY. Tom is the son of the renowned American artist, Norman Rockwell and the author or many children's books. His late wife Gail, was an artist-illustrator and the daughter of Arthur E. Sudler and Janet Whitson Sudler, both early 20th century artists - she illustrated several of her husband's children's books.
